The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery

Looking for a fun and unique way to spend your evening and catch a bite to eat? Travel on down to The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery and see if you can take on the famous 72 oz steak challenge. With so much to see and do, the steakhouse has something to offer for everyone to enjoy. When you enter the doors to the restaurant, you are greeted by a glorious display of cowboy ambiance and décor that makes it feel as if you just walked on set to an old cowboy movie. At its start and when it was located along Route 66 at its original location, you could expect to be welcomed by horseback riding cowboys and cowgirls.

When driving in the direction of Amarillo from all points, billboards advertising for the steakhouse itself as well as The Big Texan 72 oz Steak Challenge will be seen at considerable distances from the town. This challenge is no joke. Contestants must eat and fully consume a giant 72 steak cooked to their choosing alongside a baked potato, a salad, a dinner roll, and a shrimp cocktail. It is a lot more than what you would probably think. When you enter the restaurant, an artificial display of the 72 oz dinner is displayed for visitors to see just how much it truly is. Challengers get the honor to sit atop a lifted stage in the middle of the restaurant so patrons can view from all points.

There have been notable people who have tried their hand and succeeded at completing this challenge. None other than Adam Richman and his TV show Man v. Food graced the steakhouse with their presence to film his shot at the enormous slab of meat. It’s no surprise that he completed the challenge, but there is someone you probably wouldn’t suspect that not only was successful at consuming the 72 oz steak dinner, but at three whole dinners, and wanted to eat a fourth, in only 20 minutes! This extremely amazing feat was accomplished by a 120 pound mother of four named Molly Schuyler. Schuyler was not ready to stop after the last bite of her third dinner and asked for a fourth, but owners Bobby and Danny Lee had to turn her down out of fear of what could happen.

This challenge started the steakhouse’s opening year in November with the promise of $60 for the winner and no charge for the full dinner if contestants were to complete it. If someone fails to complete the challenge, they must pay for all of the meal. This rule still holds true today. The famous 1960s wrestler Klondike Bill gave the challenge a go in 1963 and ate two full dinners. Still not as impressive as Molly if you ask me.

The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery added on the “brewery” part in 2010 when the owners, who are also brothers, Bobby and Danny Lee started crafting and drafting their own creations at the restaurant to many peoples delight. The brewery was even named in Draft Magazine as one of the Top Ten brewing experiences in the world.

Those who want to take advantage of what The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery has to offer can visit during the hours of operation from 10:00 AM to 10:30 PM every day at 7701 I-40 East, Amarillo, TX 79118.
